The canton of Zug is to provide CHF55 million ($68.5 million) for the establishment of a joint leaing and research centre run by the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology ETH Zurich and representatives of Zug’s business community. The facility is intended to combine academic education with professional practice on the Tech Cluster Zug AG site in the Göbli area of Zug. Cadmium, a toxic and carcinogenic heavy metal found in soils, is present in our food. A study by the French-speaking Swiss Consumer Federation has detected cadmium in 67 out of 90 everyday products that were tested. None of the products contained cadmium levels that exceeded safety standards, but it raises the question of the cumulative effect of small doses ingested over several weeks. The war in Iran took its toll on the Jungfrau Railways in the first half of 2026. As a result, significantly fewer travellers from Asia visited the Jungfraujoch. A corruption case involving senior figures in the Swiss financial sector is to be heard in court: Pierre Mirabaud, former president of the Swiss Bankers Association (SBA), is due to stand trial at the begiing of September before the Federal Criminal Court. Swiss President Guy Parmelin has expressed his condolences to the Norwegian Royal Family and the people of the Scandinavian country following the death of King Harald V. Parmelin was “deeply saddened” by the King’s death, he wrote on X. A 17-year-old Briton on holiday with his family has drowned in Lake Cauma in Graubünden, easte Switzerland. The young man was trying to swim to the shore from a small island when he got into difficulty. The incident occurred at around 5:45pm on Thursday, according to a statement issued on Friday by the Graubünden police. A severe thunderstorm has “significantly” disrupted operations at Zurich Airport.
